Administrative History

The Department of Mathematics (1921- ) is responsible for teaching courses related to mathematics at Brigham Young University.

The Department of Mathematics was formed in 1921 in the College of Arts and Sciences as part of a division of the earlier Department of Mathematics and Physics. It was later transferred to the College of Physical and Engineering Sciecnes in 1954, and to the current College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in 1973. The department provides instruction in the field of mathematics. Chairs have included Carl F. Eyring (1921-1929, 1931-1937, 1939-1951), Milton Marshall (1929-1931, 1938, and 1953-1957), Harvey J. Fletcher (1958-1963), Kenneth J. Hillam (1964-1978), Peter A. Crawley (1978-1990), Donald W. Robinson (1990-1995), Peter W. Bates (1993-1995), Gerald M. Armstrong (1995-1998), Wayne W. Barrett (1998-2001), Lynn E. Garner (2001-2007), Tyler J. Jarvis (2007-2012), and Robin O. Roundy (2012- ).

Biographical History

Lynn E. Garner (born 1941) was a mathematics professor in Utah.

Lynn E. Garner was born in Ontario, Oregon on July 19, 1941. He is married to Kaye Waite Garner. Garner was a student at Brigham Young University from January 1960, to May, 1962, having transferred from CalTech. He received his master's degree from the University of Utah in 1964, and during 1963-1964 he taught 3/4 time at Brigham Young University while finishing his degree at Utah. In 1966, he began Ph.D. work at Cornell, transferring after one year to the University of Oregon, where he received his Ph.D. in December 1968. His specialties were projective geometry, number theory, calculus pedagogy. Garner remained in the Department of Mathematics at Brigham Young University until his retirement in 2007.

Biographical History

Jan E. Wynn (born 1937) was a professor of mathematics in Utah.

Jan E. Wynn was born in Rexburg, Idaho on February 13, 1937. He is married to Sherleen Newton Wynn. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Idaho, and his master's degree from Utah State University. Wynn joined the Department of Mathematics faculty at Brigham Young University in 1966, serving as associate department chair from 1967 to 1969. He was also a Math Club advisor from 1981 to 1996. Wynn retired from the university in 2000.

Biographical History

Gurcharan S. Gill (born 1934) was a mathematics professor in Utah.

Gurcharan S. Gill was born on May 14, 1934 in Dhndike, India. He is married to Vilo Pratt Gill. Gill received his bachelor's degree at Brigham Young University in 1958, and his master's degree at University of Utah in 1960. He then began teaching in the Department of Mathematics at Brigham Young University as he worked on his Ph.D. at University of Utah, completing his degree in 1965. Gill served as associate chair from 1996 to 1999, and retired at the end of his term.
