Administrative History

The Department of French and Italian at Brigham Young University has more than 1,500 students enrolled every semester, and is one of the largest of its kind in North America. The Department offers a wide range of courses from beginning language courses to graduate seminars in literature, culture, pedagogy and linguistics. The young and dynamic Department faculty are recognized nationally and internationally, and are able to provide an exceptional liberal arts training that sharpens communicative, analytical and interpretive skills that will be beneficial to students with whatever career they decide to choose in the future. The various academic programs in the Department of French and Italian lead to the Bachelors in French and Italian studies as well as the Masters of Arts in French studies. The Department also offers Study Abroad programs, a Language House, and Internship programs, illustrating a clear conviction that language fluency and cultural understanding can often be better acquired out of the classroom.
