Biographical History
Richard L. Gunn (1918-2013) was an art history professor at Brigham Young University.
Richard L. Gunn was born September 28, 1918 to Benjamin and Fanny Ensign Gunn. He was serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was attacked, which led him to enlist in the Army when he returned home. He attended the University of Utah for two years before transferring to Brigham Young University, where he completed a BS in Art in 1947 and an MS in Art 1950. He married Jeanne Wright in 1942, and they went on to have six children. She passed away in 1987 from cancer. He later married Jeanine Done Hansen. He taught public school for years before serving as the curator of the Springville Art Museum. He is best known for the 35 years he taught art history at BYU. He was recognized as Professor of the Year in 1972 and was presented with a Distinguished Service Award in 1976. He passed away March 28, 2013.
Administrative History
The Department of Travel Study (1951-2005) was an administrative unit at Brigham Young University.
The Department of Travel Study was created in 1951 to allow patrons to travel to different countries and parts of the United States in order to combine academic, spiritual, and intercultural goals in a unique way. The program was designed for anyone who wanted to participate, even those who were not full-time BYU students and for BYU students who who could not go on Study Abroad or to the Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies. The Division of Continuing Education ended the Department of Travel Study in 2004 because of the precarious state of world travel and for financial reasons.

Richard L. Gunn produced these diaries based on his trips with BYU Travel Study. His widow Jeanine donated them to Special Collections in December 2017.
