Scope and Contents note

This collection contains 166 photographs collected by Earl Maeser throughout his life. The collection includes US Military Postcards, other Army/Navy related photographs, photographs from Cuba, Panama, and Victoria, British Columbia which include photographs of the Butchart's Gardens. The rest of the collection consists of miscellaneous family photographs. Collection dates range from 1920-1970.

Biographical History

Earl Maeser (1899-1984) was an active in the U.S. Navy and a former member of the Salt Lake Board of Education.

Earl Maeser was born in Thatcher, Arizona on October 1, 1899. He was the son of Emil and Lillian Loveland Maeser and the grandson of Karl G. Maeser. He served with the Utah National Guard on the Mexican Border in 1916. Then he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1923. Later he was an agent for the Bureau of Internal Revenue in Florida and then went on to be a high school teacher and principal in Weston, Malad and Montpelier, Idaho. He was an active reserve commander in the U.S. Navy in the Battle of Guadalcanal and the recapture of the Phillipines. He was a former member of the Salt Lake Board of Education and was a past President of the Utah Retired Teachers Association. He died in Provo, Utah, on February 3, 1984.
