Scope and Contents

Materials include copies of letters from Jon A. Hellstrom, Joseph Angell Moses (J.A.) Young, and John Swensen to Helen E. Armstrong Young in the years 1874, 1875, and 1891 respectively. Included are copies of a 1916 death certificate for J.A. Young (Helen's son), a death certificate for Helen from 1939, as well as Helen's obituary. Included with the copies of John Swensen's letter is a transcription of the same letter and copies of the envelope it came in. Dated 1874-1939.

Biographical History

Helen E. Armstrong Young (1856-1939) was a Latter-day Saint pioneer, teacher, librarian, and member of stake Relief Society and Mutual Improvement Association boards.

Helen Eldredge Armstrong Young was born on January 17, 1856, in Salt Lake City to parents Agnes Smith Parker and William Babbit. In 1858, she moved with her mother to Ephraim, Utah, and lived there the majority of her life. In 1890 she married Brigham Young, Jr. and they had one son named Joseph Angell Moses (J.A.) Young, who died in 1916. Armstrong Young also raised her nephew as her own child when his mother died. She was active in the community, having jobs such as a pioneer school teacher and telegraph operator in various Utah cities, teacher to the Indians at Washakie, and the librarian of Snow College in Ephraim. She was also involved in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving on the stake boards of the Relief Society, Mutual Improvement Association, and was active in the work of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.

She died in Ephraim, Utah, on April 22, 1939.
