Scope and Contents

Materials include a handwritten letter written April 10, 1844 in Hancock, New Hampshire. The letter is addressed to close family friends, the James Cunningham family of Rockford, Illinois. The letter includes memories of past interactions as well as an update on the Weston family. Notably, Weston asks for informatin about the Mormons, explaining that some of his friends are falling the "false delution" of Joseph Smith. He also notes that his uncle has sold his property and intends to join the Mormons in "Norveuo."

Biographical History

Ephraim Weston (1823-1861) was a Latter-day Saint and soldier in the Civil War.

Ephraim Weston was born on November 9, 1823 in Antrim, New Hampshire to William Weston and Harriet Hale Weston. On November 9, 1848, he married Hannah Elvina Gates from nearby Peterborough, New Hampshire. They were the parents of four children, two boys and two girls.

Ephraim was a captain in the 2nd New Hampshire Volunteers during the Civil War, participating in the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861. He died December 9, 1861 and was buried near his home in Hancock, New Hampshire.
