Philip II letters to Diego de Orellana de Chaves
Scope and Contents
Contains 176 handwritten letters (379 leaves and in Spanish) relating to Spain's struggle with her English, French, and Dutch enemies on the seas of western Europe. They especially deal with how to conduct the naval war against Spain's enemies after the defeat of the Armada. The items cover the period of Philip's reign from 1591 to the King's death in September of 1598. Most of the material is addressed to Diego de Orellana de Chaves, the royal governor of Spain's northern coast.
All the manuscripts are in contemporary Spanish secretarial hands, and a few have the writers' autographs. 159 items are from Philip II, and all are signed. 52 are signed with the King's autograph signature and 107 with official stamped facsimile signatures. Many of the items have contemporary wax impressions of official seals and also have contemporary endorsements.
