Scope and Contents

Journal by Wright, March 1839 to January 1843, records his journey from Nauvoo, Illinois to the East Coast, his missionary efforts there and then his missionary labors in Scotland. He was one of the first missionaries to the country. It includes an account of his return on the Ship Sydney, and his activities in Altoona, Pennsylvania. His genealogy, financial accounts and some miscellaneous notations are included, including some work he performed on the Nauvoo Temple.

Custodial History

Given to the Historical Department by Shirley W. Theobald from Payson, Utah in 1967. She is the great granddaughter of Alexander Wright. Historical Department already has the item on film, but there are parts of the film that are unreadable. In 1987, the donor gave Frederick S. Buchannan permission to publish the diary at some future time and provided him with a photocopy. Buchanan was having a typescript made. These items were donated to Special Collections in 1988.
