Biographical History

Rhoda Ann Dykes Burgess was born May 1, 1846 in Nauvoo, Illinois, to Dorcas Keeling and George Parker Dykes. After traveling to Salt Lake with her mother in 1852 she remained in Salt Lake until 1863, when her family was called to settle in the St. George/Pine Valley area. There she married George Martin Burgess on April 16, 1864. She bore eleven children, nine of whom lived to adulthood; and she helped her husband with his farming, ranching, and sheep and cattle herding. She and her husband moved to Lund, Nevada, in 1900 and then to Alpine, Utah in 1915. Rhoda Ann passed away on November 10, 1918 and was buried in Alpine. Ernest Hungate Burgess, the tenth child of Rhoda and George Burgess, was born January 3, 1884 in Pine Valley, Utah. He attended the Cedar City Branch Normal School from 1899-1904 and then served a mission to Germany and Switzerland from 1904-1907. On June 3, 1908 he married Donna Viola Miles and later became bishop of the Roosevelt, Utah First Ward. He was also an educator and a deputy county attorney of Wasatch County, Utah. Ernest died on December 25, 1931.
