Collection contains sound cassette recordings by Stanley Kent Bramwell, recorded between July 24, 1971 and October 27, 1972. Includes twelve sound cassette recordings documenting Lieutenant Colonel Bramwell's war time experiences in Vietnam as a pilot of an AC130 Gunship.

Scope and Contents

Contains tape cassette recordings, wav. files, and mp3 files of the experiences of Stanley Kent Bramwell in the Vietnam War as a pilot. These recordings document many of his training experiences at various camps throughout the United States and the Philippines. There are also recordings of time spent with his family during his leaves from the military. He tells of attacks on the military made in Vietnam and the damage caused to their planes.

Biographical History

Stanley Kent Bramwell (1929-1998) was a pilot and ecclesiastical leader. He served as an officer in the United States Air Force.

Stanley Kent Bramwell was born July 23, 1929 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Ernest Bramwell and Odetta Hales Bramwell. In 1947 he was asked to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Argentina. Following his return from Argentina, he attended the University of Utah where he participated in the Air Force ROTC program. On December 18, 1953, he married Dorothy Madsen in the Salt Lake City Temple. In January 1955, the Bramwells relocated to San Antonio, Texas, where Stan Bramwell reported for active duty at Lackland Air Force Base; the following month, he began flight training in Hondo, Texas. He received his "wings" at Enid Air Force Base, Oklahoma.

Assigned to Harlingen Air Force Base in Texas, he flew T-29 planes. During this period of time he also served as Branch President of the Mormon San Benito Branch. In August 1955 he was transferred to Lackland Air Force Base where he became an Academic Instructor at Officer Candidate School. During his tenure at Lackland, Stan Bramwell also became jet qualified, and was awarded the Commendation Medal; he also served as a counselor in a ward bishopric and a stake high council member in his church.

In February 1962, Bramwell was assigned to the Strategic Air Command. He and his family relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he flew the KC-97 refueling tanker. In Nebraska, he also served on the Winter Quarters Stake High Council of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In May 1963 he was transferred to Westover Air Force Base near Springfield, Massachusetts, where he flew missions to the Azores and Labrador. In Springfield, he served in the Springfield, Massachusetts branch presidency of the Church. In November 1965, he was transferred to McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey where he was assigned to the Military Airlift Command. He learned to fly the C-130 cargo plane and as part of the 29th squadron, flew missions to Vietnam. He was also promoted to Major, and served as the branch president of the Dix-McGuire Branch of the Church in the Short Hills, New Jersey Stake. In August 1968 he was transferred to the Airlift Command Post at Anderson Air Force Base in Guam. In Guam he also served as executive secretary in the local branch of the Church.

Bramell served in the Air Force for twenty-eight years, retiring as a colonel in 1983. Between 1994 and 1997 he served as mission president of the Dominican Republic Santiago Mission of the Church. He died on April 24, 1998 in Fairfield, California.
