Scope and Contents

Collection includes the originals, photocopies, and digital scans of a ledger used by David Hale and two notebooks used by Ira P. Hale. Also includes a photocopy and a typescript of a letter from Lorenzo D. Wasson, Emma Smith, and a third author to David Hale. The handwriting may be from Joseph Smith, but it is unsigned. Original documents date from 1827 to 1888.

Biographical History

David Hale (1794-1878) was a farmer in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the brother of Emma Hale Smith.

David Hale was born on March 7, 1794 in Harmony, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania to parents Isaac Hale and Elizabeth Lewis; he was Emma Hale Smith's older brother. Hale served as a soldier during the War of 1812. He married Rhoda Jane Skinner at Harmony, Pennsylvannia in 1823 and they had five children. In approximately the 1840s he moved to Illinois and continued to work as a farmer. While he knew Joseph Smith during his lifetime, he never joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Hale died on April 16, 1878 in Amboy, Illinois.

Biographical History

Ira P. Hale (b. 1824) was a minister, teacher, and local official in Nevada. He was also the oldest son of David Hale.

Ira P. Hale was born in 1824 in Harmony, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania to parents David Hale and Rhonda Jane Skinner. In 1880, Ira lived in Nevada where he worked as a minister, teacher, and local official.

Hale's death date is currently unknown.
