R. J. Ormsby letters

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: MSS SC 976

Scope and Contents

Letters with photocopies and typescripts. Ormsby sent these items to his wife, Betsy Ormsby, in East Saginaw, Michigan. They give many details on the military actions in which Ormsby was involved. He tells about the Peninsular Campaign of 1862 in a number of letters and reports his experiences in the Second Battle of Manassas of 1862 in one letter. After that engagement he was sent to a hospital in Rhode Island to convalesce from an illness.

Ormsby was involved in some heavy fighting. At one point he stated: "I have had fore balls strike my clothers." He also documents some of the unfortunate incidents of the war. Once, in describing the plight of the Confederate wounded after a battle, he said that the "groans for help was awful but our folks would not let them come to help them when they come in sight they would fire on them and make them go back."
