John Fisk incoming letters

 File — Folder: 1
Identifier: MSS SC 845

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of letters received by John Fisk from members of the Fisk family living in Minnesota and Montana. In the fall of 1866 John Fisk and three brothers led an expedition of several hundred people to Montana. He and his brothers bought a defunct newspaper and published on 15 Nov. 1866 the first issue of the "Helena Weekly Herald." The "Helena Weekly" was an influential Republican newspaper in the late 1860's.

One of the letters, dated 16 May 1869, was written on a printed copy of the newspaper dated 1 May 1869, vol. 1, no. 10. The bulk of the letters are concerned with family matters. They discuss finances, the possibility of various members moving to Montana, and deaths in the family.
