Scope and Contents note

Contains fifty-four photocopied leaves of an autograph book belonging to Christiansen, who compiled the book in 1887 while serving time in the Utah Territorial Penitentiary for practicing plural marriage. The book includes autographs, comments, and well wishes of fellow prisoners many of whom also reaffirm their faith in the practice of plural marriage. The materials are dated from April 7, 1887 to August 5, 1887.

Biographical History

Christian Peter Christiansen (1838-1918) practiced plural marriage.

Christian Peter Christiansen was born on August 18, 1838 in Lindholm, Aalborg, Denmark. On October 30, 1860 he married Kirstine Marie Murman in Veggerby, Denmark. In subsequent years he came to Utah where he practiced plural marriage and wed four additional women. In 1887 he served time in the Utah Territory Penitentiary for violation of the Edmunds-Tucker Act which prohibited the practice of plural marriage as well as cohabitation. Christian P. Christiansen died on July 20, 1918 in Monroe, Sevier, Utah.
