Scope and Contents note

Joseph Vickery Robison’s mission diary is in a 4.5 by 7 inch black hardback book. A typescript of the journal, 15 pages long, is included. This journal was written during Joseph Robison’s mission to London and covers events from December 20, 1871, through May 25, 1872. The journal covers Robison receiving his mission call during General Conference on April 8, 1871. It accounts that before traveling to England, he visited some relatives in Michigan, an Aunt Susan and a brother-in-law named Henry Olmstead. He documents traveling by steamboat to England and arrived in Liverpool on December 8, 1871. Also included are acounts of teaching the gospel in the Lamberth Branch and at homes, visiting saints in North and South London, touring ruins of ancient churches and castles, and walking several miles a day (sometimes twenty-five miles a day). The journal ends abruptly on May 25, 1872, with a space designated for May 26th’s entry.

Biographical History

Joseph Vickery Robison (1832-1914) was the father-in-law of Louise Y. Robison who became General President of the Relief Society.

Joseph Vickery Robison was the father-in-law of Louise Y. Robison who became General President of the Relief Society. He was born on March 30, 1832, in Clay, Onandago, New York, to Joseph Robinson and Lucretia Hancock. He married Martha Jane Olmstead on March 29, 1858, in Bethel, Branch, Michigan. His journal mentions that he was living in Fillmore, Utah, before his mission. After his mission, he married Elizabeth Wright Marshall on October 5, 1885. He passed away on December 9, 1914, in Fillmore, Millard, Utah.
