Scope and Contents

Contains journals and personal papers of Dave Martin Hellewell. The journals describe Hellewell's daily activities, including his Church service, career, and interactions with his family members. They also document the death of Hellewell's first wife and two children, as well as his second marriage and births of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Several of the journals include newspaper clippings of political events, obituaries, and advertisements. Hellewell's personal papers include pass-along cards from his mission with his wife, a printed Family Group Record for genealogy, and a copy of the program from his son's funeral service. All materials dated circa 1914-1994.

Biographical History

David Martin Hellewell (1897-1998) was a U.S. Navy veteran and a farmer in Ogden, Utah.

David Martin Hellewell was born on June 14, 1897 to Joseph Henry Hellwell and Martha Jane Horspool Hellewell in Ogden, Utah. He spent much of his youth in Paul, Idaho. He married Alice Etta Daniels on January 22, 1920. She passed away in 1965 on September 13. With her, he had his two children: David Martin Hellewell, Jr. and Elizabeth Hellewell, born 1921 and 1923 respectively. He remarried to Nellie Frances Fowler Daniels in 1966. Dave was a farmer, and enjoyed gardening. He was also a letter carrier for the Post Office in Ogden and a veteran of the US Navy, having served in the First World War. His son David died in 1983 of a heart attack, and his daughter Elizabeth died in 1992. David served three missions for the church. He died on April 2, 1998, at one-hundred years of age. He was buried in the Ogden City Cemetery.
