Scope and Contents

An account written by Andrew Garland Mayfield of his time in the Battle of Okinawa, World War II, as a member of Company F, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines. The journal covers the period between April 1 and June 21, 1945. The account includes color drawings made by the author.

Biographical / Historical

Andrew Garland Mayfield was born in 1921 in Whitney, Hill, Texas to Samuel Bert Mayfield and Lula Rachel Mitchell. Andrew joined the United States Marines between 1941 and 1944. He served as a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, and was a Field Music Corporal. He fought in the Battle of Okinawa during WWII. Andrew was wounded in action on June 5th, 1945, and returned home. He passed away April 17, 2003 in California.

Custodial History

The creator gave the journal/account to a third party who gave the journal to Grant W. Maxwell. It was delivered to the BYU library by Dean C. Jessee on October 25, 2005. Dean is a neighbor of Grant W. Maxwell.
