Allen Powers interview

 File — Folder: 1
Identifier: MSS SC 3155

Scope and Contents

Transcript of an interview conducted by Jim Keezell on 5 July 1985 for the Ray Hillam project. Powers was in the United States Marine Corps stationed at Sugie, Japan, with the First Marine Air Wing in 1964 when he learned he was being deployed to Vietnam. He had already been in the Marine Corps for six years and had received much training. He landed in Danang, Vietnam, and was a plane commander in the UH23 Delta helicopter. He told about his attack missions and about killing others and being shot at. He served his tour of duty but was ordered to return to Vietnam in 1968 and told about his experiences at that time. At first, he thought the war was justified because the United States was fighting against communism, but he later thought all the combat was unneccessary because the American forces were not fighting to win the war.
