Scope and Contents

Contains letters written primarily by John V. McConnell to his cousin Anna Allen, and sometimes her husband, Woodruff Allen. Contains photocopies of 52 typed letters ranging from 1965-1976. John explains details about his family history and his personal life. John lived in San Diego, California, and Milton-Freewater, Oregon, and Anna lived in Provo, Utah, during this exchange.

There is 1 photo clipping with writing showing where John's house was located and where they got wood.

A few of the letters are written from Marie De Remer (John's sister), including some photocopies of handwritten letters and some typed. These provide more family history information. One is a typed letter by Marie and includes a photocopied newspaper excerpt on the death of her and John's father, Jehiel McConnell, in 1878.

Biographical / Historical

John Vernon McConnell was born on September 20, 1897, in Panguitch, Utah, to Jehiel Eli McConnell and Hansene Marie Clove. He moved to Bingham County, Idaho at a young age. His parents separated, and in 1928, due to cancer, his father took his own life. He was the oldest of 7 siblings. He married Lois Irene Storm in 1933 in Twin Falls, Idaho. They had one daughter together. By 1950, they moved to San Diego, California, where they lived through much of the 1960s. McConnell then moved to Oregon, where he died on August 8, 1976.

Marie De Remer was born on August 3, 1905, in Panguitch, Utah, to Jehiel Eli McConnell and Hansene Marie Clove. She moved to Bingham County, Idaho at a young age. Her parents separated when she was a bit older, and in 1928, due to cancer, her father took his own life. She had 7 siblings, two born many years after her. She married Thomas H. Kitts in 1923 and had one child with him. She married Harold Rice De Remer in 1931. She moved from Idaho to Portland and later to Los Angeles, California, where she lived the rest of her life. McConnell died on January 20, 1996.

Biographical / Historical

Mary Anna Adair Allen was born on July 21, 1904, in Hatch, Utah, to Edwin Ruthfin Adair and Neminnie Sophia Clove. Anna was orphaned at six and raised by her mother's sisters. She attended school at Orderville, Glendale and Murdock Academy. Anna married Woodruff Lloyd Allen on August 15, 1928, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He died in 1977. Anna worked for many years with the BYU Food Service and served Latter-day Saint missions to Fresno and Los Angeles, California, and Atlanta, Georgia. She was a professional genealogical researcher in Scandinavian records. Anna died on September 15, 1999, in Provo, Utah.
