Scope and Contents

Transcripts of interviews with John Eaglefeather Dixon and Daniel Rhodes Dixon, conducted by Diana Turnbow and April Chabries. Also includes seven DVDs containing the interview recordings. These interviews are separated into four transcript sections. Section 1 and 2 are interviews of John Dixon on July 22 and July 23 in Walnut Creek, California, with typed transcripts on pages of 1-51 and pages 1-21. Section 3 includes additional material with John Dixon that are not included on the DVD, pages 1-13. Section 4 is the interview with Daniel Dixon on July 24, 2003, in Carmel, California, pages 1-36.

Biographical / Historical

John Eaglefeather Dixon was born to photographer Dorothea Margaretta Nutzhorn Lange and painter, Lafayette Maynard Dixon, on June 12, 1928, in San Francisco, California. He married Helen Viola Nesbit in 1949 in California. John and his older brother Daniel Rhodes Dixon were the subjects of a 2010 documentary "Child of Giants: My Journey with Maynard Dixon and Dorothea Lange" John died on July 28, 2016.

Daniel Rhodes Dixon was born to photographer Dorothea Margaretta Nutzhorn Lange and painter, Lafayette Maynard Dixon, on May 15, 1925, in San Francisco, California. He married Mariella Voorhees on August 25, 1979, in Minden, Nevada. Daniel and his younger brother John Eaglefeather Dixon were the subjects of a 2010 documentary, "Child of Giants: My Journey with Maynard Dixon and Dorothea Lange." Daniel was a successful writer for magazines, political campaigns, and in marketing, including working on advertising campaigns for Volkswagen. He died on July 9, 2009, in Charleston, Pennsylvania.

Diana Turnbow was born in 1969. She is a storyteller and curator, with an expertise in photographs and photographic collections. Diana received her BA from Brigham Young University in 1992, and was formerly the Curator of Photography at the Brigham Young University Museum of Art.

April Chabries is a film director and producer and has worked on documentaries about the intermountain west. She is also a professor of film at Brigham Young University, teaching courses in documentary films and web video. She served as Assistant Dean of Technology for the College of Fine Arts and Communications.
