Scope and Contents

Materials collected by Larry Karsens documenting Cinerama, a widescreen film projection process invented in 1952 that utilized three synchronized 35mm projectors on one screen. Materials include film posters, lobby cards, promotional books, novels based on Cinerama films, magazines featuring Cinerama films, programs, clippings, letters, film stills, scrapbooks, research printed from the Internet, equipment manuals, sheet music, board games, and puzzles. Film titles featured in the collection include Seven Wonders of the World (1956), Windjammer (1958), How the West was Won (1962), The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962), Khartoum (1966), and Krakatoa: East of Java (1968). Also contains materials on large format cinema theaters, including blueprints, materials on The American Widescreen Museum, the Indian Hills theater in Omaha, Nebraska, and cinema palaces in Omaha. Materials dated 1940-2015.

Biographical / Historical

Larry Karstens was part of the investment group involved in the Indian Hills Theater's preservation in Omaha, Nebraska. The theater, known for its Cinerama screen, eventually closed in 2000. Larry collected various promotional materials, film stills, and other materials related to the history, production, and screening of Cinerama films. As of 2022, Karstens was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska.
