Biographical / Historical

Brigham Thomas Higgs, known as B.T. Higgs, was born to Thomas Higgs and Elizabeth Stowe on March 10, 1858, in Salt Lake City, Utah. B.T.’s father, Thomas Higgs, was Brigham Young’s private carpenter. Thomas was born in New York, his parents having immigrated there from England. Thomas taught his son, B.T., carpentry skills, which later enabled B.T. to teach woodworking at Brigham Young Academy for twenty years. He was then appointed as superintendent of custodians and experimented successfully with a system to employ students as janitors. B.T. married Susannah Summers on October 16, 1876, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and they had six children. Susannah passed away in 1929, and B.T. passed away on July 12, 1939. Susannah was the daughter of Emma Hodges and George Summers, who were also residents of Utah.
