Biographical History

James Montgomery (1771-1854) was a British poet, hymnwriter, and editor.

James Montgomery was born in Irvine, England on November 4, 1771 to John Montgomery and Mary Blackley. He went on to become a prolific poet, writing among many other works the poem "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief," which was later set to music. He also supported of the abolishment of slavery and wrote poetry on the topic.

John Montgomery died on April 30, 1854 in Yorkshire, Scotland, where he had spent much of his life.
