Biographical History

K. H. Thorne (1939-2004) was a botanist and curator of plants in Utah.

Kaye Hugie was born on February 19, 1939 in Logan, Utah to LaVern Keam Hugie and Edith Linford. Raised as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she was baptized in 1947. She later attended and graduated from Utah State University. She married James Meyers Thorne on June 3, 1960 in the Logan Utah Temple, and they had two children.

After her marriage, Thorne and her husband moved to California where she worked as a teacher. In 1966 they returned to Utah and settled in Provo, where her husband taught at Brigham Young University. She later returned to school, earning a master's degree in Botany at BYU. Afterward she worked as an assistant curator of plants at the university's herbarium, where she worked to collect and preserve plants for teaching and research. She was also a talented illustrator, drawing plants in pen and ink.

Thorne suffered from Alzheimer's disease in her later years, and died on April 30, 2004 in Provo, Utah.
