Contains a transcription of the journal of Philip B. Lewis created by Glade Tew. It relates Lewis's experience as a missionary in the Sandwich Islands. A short description of his life is also included as well as a brief family history. Materials are dated 1997.

Biographical History

Philip B. Lewis (1804-1877) was a mission president in the Sandwich Islands.

Philip B. Lewis was born on January 16, 1804, in Marblehead, Massachusetts, to parents Edmund and Abigail Bigelow Prentice Lewis. He married Maria Theressa Bonny on June 26, 1837. He later married Jane Amanda Stevens on May 11, 1848.

Following this marriage, he was called as mission president of the Sandwich Islands mission where he served from 1851-1855. He later married Emily Lewis and Mary Scott on June 9, 1868.

Lewis passed away on November 13, 1877 in Kanab, Utah, where he is buried.

Biographical History

Glade Tew is an accounting professor.

Glade Tew attended school at Brigham Young University where he earned his bachelor's degree. Following his schooling at BYU he moved onto Southern Utah University where he received his masters. He completed his education at Oklahaoma State University were he received his doctorate degree.

He began teaching accounting at Brigham Young University Hawaii in 1996. In 2009 he was appointed Dean of the College of Business, Computing and Government. He served in that position until 2014.

He is married to Donette Tew. They have five children. Tew and his family currently reside in Idaho where he is a professor of accounting at Brigham Young Unviersity Idaho.

Collection was obtained after David Whittaker attended the Pioneers in the Pacific Conference held at BYU Hawaii in 1999, and brought back a copy for BYU's Special Collections Library.
