Scope and Contents

Collection contains photocopies of handwritten and signed letters, a mission call from John Taylor, and photographs relating to the life of Joseph Morrell. Photographs are mainly portraits but also show town and family life. Also includes photographs of famliy and close friends including prominent church leader George Q. Cannon. Materials date from approximately 1863 to 1963.

Biographical History

Joseph Morrell (1856-1906) was a businessman and father.

Joseph Morrell was born on February 11, 1856 in London, England to parents Thomas and Selina Johnson Morrell. His family moved to Utah in 1861 and settled in Logan. He was baptized on July 2, 1868.

After acquiring some education Joseph began working at Zion's Cooperative Mercantile Insitution before starting his own business. Joseph also served on the board of the Utah Agricultural College for many years, represeting his district. He filled various other public position throughout his lifetime. He was a consistent member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and from 1880-1882 served a mission in the southern states. He was a member of his stake high priests quoroum and was serving as stake president at the time of his death.

Joseph married Margaret Rowland on February 20, 1879 in Salt Lake City, Utah and together they had 7 children. He later married Mary Ann Danes on October 23, 1898 in Preston, Idaho and together they had 4 children.

Joseph passed away on May 30, 1906 in Logan, Utah where he is buried.
