Biographical / Historical

Margaret Elizabeth Schutt Gordon (1866-1966) was a mother and genealogist.

Margaret Elizabeth Schutt Gordon was born on January 29, 1866, in Ossett, Yorkshire, England, to parents Henry and Eliza Brereton Vernon Schutt. At the age of 10 her family moved to British Colombia, Canada while her parents served as missionaries for the Church of England. In 1885 she converted to Mormonism and her family moved to Utah. Here she met James Frater Gordon and they were married on July 13, 1893, in Logan, Utah. Together they had 4 children. Her family moved back to Canada and served as missionaries, trying to expand Mormonism throughout Alberta. They later moved back to Utah where she began to gain an appreciation for genealogy. Eventually Margaret and James settled in Los Angeles, California. She continued to do genealogy work until her death on October 3, 1966, in San Francisco, California.
