Scope and Contents

Collection contains materials documenting the experience of J. L. Crawford while he served as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II. It tells of his travels form Fort Douglas to the European war front and his experience touring Europe with the Thunderbird division. Collection also contains materials telling the story of the irrigation ditches leading into Zion National Park and the problems they created within the ecosystems of the park.

Biographical / Historical

Jasper Louis Crawford (1914-2011) was a member of the U.S. Army and zoologist.

Jasper Lousi Crawford was born on January 5, 1914, in Springdale, Utah, to parents William Louis and Mary Jane Bean Crawford. He grew up working summers in Zion National Park and gained a love for nautre that helped guide him to his future career. He graduated from Hurrican high school in 1933 and began his education at Dixie Junior College and later Brigham Young University. He graduated in 1947 with a degree in zoology.

He was drafted into the Army where he served for more than four years. He was deployed in Europe during World War II and took part in the liberation of Dachau concentration camp.

On August 4, 1950 he married Fern Houson in Panguitch, Utah. He spent the remainder of his life in southern Utah. Here he held positions as a park ranger, business owner, and volunteer. He passed away on September 26, 2011 in St. George, Utah. He is buried in Panguitch, Utah.
