Biographical History

Richard L. Gunn (1918-2013) was an art history professor at Brigham Young University.

Richard L. Gunn was born September 28, 1918 to Benjamin and Fanny Ensign Gunn. He was serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was attacked, which led him to enlist in the Army when he returned home. He attended the University of Utah for two years before transferring to Brigham Young University, where he completed a BS in Art in 1947 and an MS in Art 1950. He married Jeanne Wright in 1942, and they went on to have six children. She passed away in 1987 from the effects of cancer. He later married Jeanine Done Hansen. He taught public school for years before serving as the curator of the Springville Art Museum. He is best known for the 35 years he taught art history at BYU. He was recognized as Professor of the Year in 1972 and was presented with a Distinguished Service Award in 1976. He passed away March 28, 2013.
