Biographical History

Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904) was a British photographer.

Eadweard Muybridge was born on April 9, 1830 as Edward James Muggeridge to John and Susan Muggeridge in Kingston upon Thames, England. In 1855, he emigrated to the United States. He originally gained prominence as a landscape photographer around 1867, but he is known today for his photographic studies of motion, especially animal locomotion. He changed his name several times, but settled on "Muybridge" in 1867 after he returned to the United States from a visit to Britain. He changed the spelling of his first name to "Eadweard" after an 1882 trip to England. Muybridge returned to England permanently in 1894. He died in Kingston upon Thames on May 8, 1904.
