Biographical / Historical

Charles Curtis Clayton was born on June 3, 1902, in Cambridge, Nebraska to Curtis Stanton Clayton and Clara Clyde Richardson. He attended the University of Nebraska in 1922. In 1925, Charles graduated with a bachelor’s in journalism from the University of Missouri and married Mary Elizabeth Elliot. Together, Mary and Charles had two children. Charles went on to be a prominent reporter, editor, and journalism professor. He reported for the Lincoln Star until 1923. He relocated to St. Louis to work for a new newspaper. After that he went on to teach Journalism at National Chengchi University in Taiwan. After, he helped found the Hong Kong Chinese University in 1965-1966. Charles died on April 29, 1988, in Carbondale, Illinois. Little can be found about his family or about his parents.
