Custodial History

Lela Hicks Daniel sent with the donation the following note: "I am a granddaughter of Martha Smith Haskell and Thales Haskell of Manassa, Colorado. (Hattie Haskell was my mother). This photo album was given to me by Jerry Kay Smith in April, 2002. I am donating it to Brigham Young University in the hopes that other family members may find pictures of loved ones. This album is very distinctive. Quite by accident, I found a "sister" album in the Jesse N. Smith home in Parowan, Utah, in May of 2002. All pictures in that album had been removed. I personally believe that Jesse N. Smith purchased both while serving as a Danish missionary. I think Jesse N. then gave one book to his brother, Silas Sanford Smith, and kept the other for his family. Silas Sanford then gave his album to his daughter, Martha Eliza Smith (Haskell), in Manassa, Colorado, which explains why there are both Haskell and Smith pictures in the book. How it ended up in the Haskell barn is a mystery, but I consider it a miracle to have the album returned to me. Also found in the hay with the album were fifteen pages of typed onion skin pages containing family history, which had never been seen before. They relate life sketches of Martha Eliza Smith Haskell and her mother, Martha Bennett. All are in my personal possession." Lela Hicks Daniel. The following is the inscription on pages, which Jerry Kay wrote and gave to me: "Martha Smith Haskell photo album found in 1960, at the home of Thales and Martha Haskell in Manassa, Colorado, in the barn out back of the home. The pictures and pages are numbered. Hopefully, the pictures that have names next to their numbers are correct. I tried to have them identified by several of the older Smith and Haskell relatives living in and around Manassa, Colorado, in June of 1960. Jerry Kay Smith"."
