Biographical / Historical

Felix Koziol (1900-1976) was a skiing enthusiast, U.S. Forest Serviceman, and researcher who pioneered avalanche prevention in the United States.

Felix Clemens Koziol was born on June 17, 1900, in Little Falls, Minnesota to Anton Koziol and Maryanna Sygulka. He was one of six children. On March 22, 1924, in Kalispell, Montana, Felix married Bernice Annabelle Spring, and together they had two children. Felix served in the United States Forest Service for 42 years with half of that time spent as the Supervisor of the Wasatch National Forest. He also co-authored the first official publication on avalanches. He went on to publish two additional guides, in 1954 and 1961, that became official government handbooks for snow rangers. Felix retired from the U.S. Forest service in 1964, and after that he served as the director of the Utah State Parks system for four and a half years. He was inducted into the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame in 1974. He died on August 4th, 1976.
