Biographical / Historical

George Taylor was born in Duddeston, England on March 25, 1838. He married Eliza Nicholls Taylor on July 5, 1857. On June 4, 1864, they migrated to Salt Lake City, Utah. They all lived in the same house in Provo, Utah, where he was a furniture salesman for the Cluff Brothers. George then opened his own furniture company. All of his pieces were handmade and he later added a music section where he made organs. He adopted plural marriage and married a second wife named Henrietta Sawyer Taylor in 1864. George would go on to have 15 children between his two wives. In 1864, he also began his own photography career. In 1870, he sent his daughter to work with C.R. Savage to learn photo retouching. George retired in about 1885 but continued to do photography as a hobby until the 1920s. He was an active player in the Provo government, serving on two boards, the Utah County Board of Trade, and as the director of the commercial club in Provo. He died in Provo, Utah, on September 4, 1926.
