Kennecott Corporation photographs and negatives
Scope and Contents
Collection includes three photographs with corresponding glass plate negatives depicting mining operations at Kennecott Corporation's Bingham Mine. The photographs were taken in 1906, when the mine was being developed by the Utah Copper Co. Also includes two copy prints, with corresponding acetate negatives, of photographic portraits of a man.

Biographical / Historical
Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation has its roots in the founding of the Kennecott Mines Company in 1906 in Alaska. In 1915, it acquired a stake in the Utah Copper Company, which was founded in 1903 by Daniel C. Jackling and Robert C. Gemmell. By this point, the name had been changed to the Kennecott Copper Corporation. In 1936, it acquired all the assets and property of the Utah Copper Company. The Bingham mine was one of the few not to close during World War II, and produced about 30% of the copper used by the Allies. In 1981, the company was acquired by Standard Oil of Ohio, then by British Petroleum in 1987, and by Rio Tinto Zinc in 1989, at which point they formed the Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation as a new mining company. The company continues to operate the Bingham Canyon Mine, which is the largest open-pit mine in the world. While its primary product is copper, it also produces gold, silver, and molybdenum.
