Scope and Contents

Typewritten journal includes nearly daily entries from January 1, 1917, to December 31, 1918. Begins and ends with Talmage in Salt Lake City, Utah. Most entries are of meetings, lectures, funerals, and other duties pertaining to his calling as an Apostle, particularly attending stake conferences and traveling to different regions of the United States. Includes mentions of the escalation of warfare in Europe, including the eventual involvement of the United States in April 1917, and the reaction of Utah and the Church to the war. Much of the end the journal includes entries on the effects the influenza epidemic in late 1918, the ending of World War I, and the health and eventual death of President Joseph F. Smith. Includes newspaper clippings and programs related to Talmage, including many on Talmage's addresses on various topics such as the mission and purpose of the Church and the Church's stand and involvement in the war. Also includes photographs of Talmage's daughter, Elsie, and her twin baby daughters. Dated 1917-1918.

Originals restricted. Digital copy of the first twelve of thirty volumes of Talmage's personal journals (1879-1911) available online. Unedited typescripts and microfilm of all thirty volumes also available.

Conditions Governing Use

The literary rights to the Talmage collection rest with the Harold B. Lee Library and the Talmage family. Permission to publish material from the James E. Talmage collection must be obtained from the Supervisor of Reference Services at specialcollections@byu.edu.
