T.J. Brundage. Diary, t.t. of original ms., 7 pages[MTHS] Montana Historical Society. Leave McCutheonville, Ohio, March 15. Via Grinnell, Iowa, to Omaha May 11. Pass opposite Fort Kearny May 26 and Fort Laramie June 17. Via Bozeman Trail to Yellowstone River July 27, and Virginia City, Montana, August 25. At Grinnell joined company of four men with two wagons. Tried to cross over to Fort Kearny but failed and "came near drowning." In Wyoming Black Hills, Indians stampeded cattle and shot two emigrants. On Bozeman Trail joined company of 150 wagons, subjected to frequent Indian assaults, with several emigrants killed and scalped. On Yellowstone River joined "the Bridger Road." Somewhere along the Platte, writer says he was "attacked by a panther." References to panthers, pumas, or mountain lions are extremely rare in emigrant journals." Given the length of the BYU Library copy of Brundage, it may be the most complete extant copy of the journal.
