Scope and Contents

Contains materials related to the life and professional activities of Alexander and Vivia Hedquist. Includes newspapers, clippings, printed matter, correspondence, ledger books, school curricula and diplomas, scrapbooks, photographs, and other records. Much of the material is related to Hedquist Pharmacy (Provo, Utah); Farmers' and Merchants' Bank of Provo; and Walker Bank (Salt Lake City, Utah). Also includes some printed material related to Brigham Young University and Franklin Harris from the mid-20th century. Correspondence includes letters to Alex Hedquist assembled/signed by the Past Presidents of Provo Chamber of Commerce. Hedquist Pharmacy materials include a scrapbook of drug prescriptions (1881 to early 1900s); much of comes from the predecessor of Hedquist Pharmacy which is Palace Drug, owned by R.S. Heinz. Scrapbooks and photographs pertain to the life and family history of Alexander and Vivia Hedquist, including documentation of their life in Provo and travels. Dated approximately 1881-1963.

Biographical / Historical

Alexander Hedquist was born August 9, 1872, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The family moved to Provo in 1885 to improve the educational opportunities of the children. Hedquist attended Brigham Young Academy for three years. During this time he was awarded a certificate for being one of the two best spellers in the district. Mr. Hedquist was the Chamber of Commerce President from 1934 to 1936. Hedquist married Lovina Strong in 1897, but she died in 1908. He married Ella Vivia Finlayson in 1919. Hedquist died on February 5, 1965.

Ella Vivia Finlayson Hedquist was born February 2, 1885, in Payson, Utah. She married Alexander Hedquist on June 5, 1916, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The two had six children together. She died September 17, 1962.

Junece Hedquist was born in February 20, 1925, in Provo, Utah, to Alexander Hedquist and Vivia Hedquist. She went on to marry Donald C. Mackay in June, 1946, with whom she had two children. Hedquist was active in the women's clubs where she lived and in her community. She passed away on May 28, 2006, in Saint George, Utah.

Dorothy Vivia Hedquist Rowe was born on May 10, 1919 in Provo, Utah, to parents Alexander and Vivia Hedquist. She went on to marry Owen Berry Rowe on October 16, 1940 in Provo, Utah with whom she had five children. Dorothy earned a degree from Brigham Young University in 1939, and graduated with honors from Purdue University in 1969 with a Masters in Library Science. Over the years, she lived in Provo, Utah; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Phoenix, Arizona. Hedquist Rowe was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She passed away on November 7, 1995 in Saint George, Utah.
