Restricted. Closed for 50 years from the date of creation of the records, and thereafter open to the public in accordance with the L. Tom Perry Special Collections Restriction Policy. Biographical History

From the Collection: The Committee on Competence and Academic Freedom was concerned for the definition and upholding of academic freedom at Brigham Young University.

John S. Tanner was head of the Committee on Competence and Academic Freedom for a while. Through this committee statements were made on what academic freedom means to Brigham Young University. The committee also collected information on Brigham Young University's mission and how they are treating academic freedom as a religious institution for both students and staff. The committee would also work greatly on creating policies for hiring and being a professor at Brigham Young University.

Biographical History

From the Collection: John S. Tanner (1950- ) is an English professor and university administrator in Utah.

John Sears Tanner was born in 1950 and raised in Southern California. He studied English at Brigham Young University (BYU), and received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1980. He taught at Florida State University and BYU. He later served in the BYU administration, and was Academic Vice President between 2004 and 2011. In 2011 he was called to serve as a mission president in São Paulo, Brazil for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
