Biographical / Historical

James Buchanan (1791-1868) was the 15th President of the United States of America, serving during the buildup of the American Civil War.

James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 in Cove Gap, Pennsylvania to James Buchanan, Sr. and Elizabeth Speer. Buchanan graduated from Dickinson College in 1809 and went on to become a lawyer. He served in various political capacities before becoming the 15th President of the United States of America in 1857. Since he never married, the White House Hostess was his niece Harriet Lane. He inadequately grasped the severity of the issue of slavery, and the South succeeded from the Union while he was in office. Following his presidency, he retired to Wheatland, near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he died on June 1, 1868.
