Biographical History

Robert Maxwell (1921-2012) was a popular harpist and songwriter, performing on tour, the radio, and TV shows.

Maxwell was born on April 19, 1921 as Max Rosen in New York City. Neither of his parents was musical, but his other two brothers Abe Rosen and Myor Rosen also became professional harpists. Maxwell grew up in New York, and went to Juilliard on scholarship, where he studied under Marcel Grandjany and Vittorio Giannini. At age 17 he joined the National Symphony Orchestra, performing East coast to West coast. Maxwell joined the United States National Coast Guard and began to play for the servicemen. During this time he became renowned for the masculine element he brought to harp, and transitioned from his classical repertoire to pop. He continued to write and perform, throughout his life until he died on February 7, 2012.
