Biographical History

Josette B. Ashford (1920- ) was a professor of French and Italian at Brigham Young University from 1969-1999, she represented BYU in a number of capacities such as French Honor Society and Pi Delta Phi; she also represented the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a member of the General Relief Society Board among other positions.

Josette B. Ashford was born March 26, 1920 in Belgium to Joseph and Bertha Agnes Victorine Morin Britte. She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on October 22, 1948 and was married to Curtis Haven Ashford on October 29, 1951. Curtis joined the Church around 1953. They were sealed in the temple in 1954 but divorced in 1962 when Curtis went missing at sea. Josette Ashford became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America in 1955. She earned her Bachelors of Arts from BYU in 1967 and went on to earn her M.A. in French from BYU in 1970 and a Doctorate in Philosophy, also from BYU in 1972.

Josette B. Ashford spent 30 years as a Instructor and Associate Professor of French (and Italian) at BYU from 1969 to 1999 and was awarded emeritus status in 1999. She was also chairwoman and representative for Pi Delta Phi, the French Honor Society, as well as a faculty representative for the French Club. Outside the academic world, Josette worked in the Church's genealogy department, taught in the ward auxiliaries, the teacher training program, served on the Stake Board in Sunday School, in the MIA, in the Regional Welfare program, and on the General Relief Society Board. She has also been instrumental in the translation of Church materials into such as hymns and primary materials.
