Biography

Agnes Smith Baxter (1858-1943) was a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, mother and Bishop’s wife.

Agnes Smith Baxter was born May 7, 1858 to Hugh Smith and Agnes McDowell at West Derby, England. On April 30th, 1866 Agnes travelled with her mother and siblings to America, where they joined the Thomas W. Ricks pioneer company and travelled to Utah. She married John McKinnon Baxter on May 8, 1878 in Randolph, Utah, and they had two children: Robert and Jeanette, as well as a foster child named Nelly. John was called as a Bishop, and Agnes was accountable for all the supplies in the Bishop’s storehouse. Agnes was active in callings in the Relief Society as well as ward organist. She died May 8, 1943 in Evanston, Wyoming.
