Valeen Tippetts Avery; born December 22, 1936, Great Falls, Montana; died April 7, 2006, Flagstaff, Arizona; attended Rocky Mountain College in Billings and Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah; PhD, history, Northern Arizona University, 1984; president of the Mormon History Association, 1987-1988; author; professor of history, Northern Arizona University until her retirement in 2005.

Typewritten book draft with handwritten corrections. The item is an early draft of "Mormon Enigma" which length was later reduced as requested by the publisher, Doubleday & Company. The manuscript is a biography of Emma Hale Smith, first wife of the first president of the Mormon Church, Joseph Smith.
