November 19, 1916, Bloomfield CT; died September 30, 1999, East Montpelier, VT ; American political scientist; author; began academic career at University of Chicago and went to Harvard where he remained for the rest of his carreer except for a brief tenure at University of Pennsylvania.

Manuscripts dealing with Utah's Dixie. Dr. Banfield focused on the settlement of Gunlock, a Mormon settlement located northeast of St. George, Utah. One manuscript is entitled, "Mormon Hamlet" and the other, "Settlement of Southern Utah."
