Biography

George W. Johnson (1823-1900) was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a physician, postmaster, church leader, and pioneer in Ohio, Illinois, and Utah.

George Washington Johnson was born on February 19, 1823 in Pompfret, New York to Ezekiel and Julia Hills Johnson. Johnson moved to Kirtland, Ohio to live with the saints of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and it was here on April 9, 1836 that he was baptised a member of the church. Johnson married Maria Jane Johnson on April 14, 1844 in Macedonia, Illinois and had nine children. After living in Nauvoo and helping build the Nauvoo temple, Johnson traveled to Utah with the Alfred Cardon company in 1851. In Salt Lake City he married Eveline Burdick on October 1, 1851 and they had eleven children. Johnson died on January 22, 1900 in Moab, Utah.

Collection includes handwritten autobiography, patriarchal blessings, poems, and letters created by Johnson. Also included is a transcription of those materials by his great-great granddaughter. Materials date 1893 and 2000.
