Biography
Henry Baxter (1821-1873) was a Union Brigadier General.
Henry Baxter was born September 8, 1821 in Sidney, New York. Henry married Elvira Ellen George in 1854 and they had four children together. He was a businessman who voluntarily joined the Union Army, eventually being promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. Henry was involved in many campaigns, including the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. Henry led troops through the assaults in 1865 that collapsed Confederate lines for good and captured Richmond, Virginia. After the war, Henry was the United States Minister to Honduras from 1869-1872. He died December 30, 1873 in Jonesville, Michigan.

Henry Baxter letters and reports
Handwritten letters and reports. Forty-four of the items deal with Baxter's activities during the Civil War. Many of them were written by Baxter and by other participants. They deal with a wide range of military matters including the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 and the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864. Also included is official and family correspondence kept while Baxter was in Honduras.
