Biography

James Austin Cope, Sr. (1894-1963) was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and an early Utah pioneer.

James Austin Cope was born on March 29, 1894 to Thomas Henry and Amelia Jane (Lloyd) Cope in Panguitch, Utah. James attended the Tropic school and served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the southern states at the age of 19. When he returned home from his mission in 1916, James began raising livestock which would be become his livlihood throughout the remainder of his life. On May 24, 1916, James married Irma Shumway in Salt Lake City, Utah. Together they had 7 children. James Austin Cope died on December 9, 1963.
