Biographical History

Clawson Y. Cannon (1885-1977) was a high school teacher, college professor, and government worker who specialized in animal husbandry (especially dairy husbandry) and agriculture.

Clawson Young Cannon was the son of George Q. and Caroline Young Cannon. He was born on October 27, 1885, in Millcreek, Salt Lake County, Utah and died on November 3, 1977, in Provo, Utah County, Utah. Cannon was buried on November 7, 1977, in Salt Lake City Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. On September 11, 1913, Cannon married Winnifred Morrell in Logan, Utah. She died on March 12, 1974. They had four children: Rowland Morrell Cannon, Robert Young Cannon, Winnifred Cannon, and Clawson Young Cannon Jr. During his career, Cannon taught at Iowa State University, Brigham Young University, Utah State University, and a high school in Boise, Idaho. He earned his master's and doctor's degree from Iowa State; he was the first to earn a Ph.D. in Dairy Husbandry from that school. He spent 4 1/2 years in Beirut, Lebanon working for the U.S. Office of Foreign Agriculture Relations, where he helped develop the dairy program of that country. After returning to the United States, he taught at BYU until his retirement in 1971. Cannon was a member of several prestigious honor societies and national dairy science associations. He received several service and teaching awards for his work at BYU. He was recognized as a "Pioneer in the Dairy Industry by the Journal of Dairy Science in 1955 and authored more than sixty publications. He passed away in 1977.

Scope and Contents

Contains personal correspondence from Cannon's close family, especially his children and grandchildren. The correspondence is largely if not wholly undated. Most of it is greeting cards. Also contains a folder of empty envelopes with addresses. The book is a collection of newspaper clippings, scriptures, and other quotes. Contains correspondence, papers, and notes that were created during the time that Clawson Y. Cannon resided and worked in Beirut, Lebanon, for the United States government. Contains the hard leather-bound personal journals of Cannon that he penned from February 3, 1952, to October 20, 1976. The journals contain both handwritten and typewritten accounts from Cannon's life.
