Biography

Robert Sauer (1872-1944) was a composer, musician, and professor of music and Brigham Young University.

Robert Sauer was born October 3, 1872 to Friedrich Wilhelm Sauer and Charlotte Henriette Amali Anders in Rammenau, Sachsen, Germany. He married Augusta Trabert on October 17, 1896 in Erfurt, Saxony, Germany and together they had six children. Robert was a graduate of Rodeberg Music School in Germany and played with the best bands in Germany. While in the the military band in Dresden, he met fellow musician Albert Miller who introduced him to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1899 and immigrated to Provo, Utah, United States in 1905. After the death of Albert Miller, Robert followed as the director of the Brigham Young University Band in 1906 and continued to direct them for 38 years. He is best known for his composition "When It's Springtime in the Rockies." Robert died on January 5, 1944 in Provo, Utah, United States.

Scope and Contents

Contains the sheet music of several songs composed or arranged by Robert Sauer for the symphonic band. Includes handwritten copies of "When the Snow Flied in the Rockies," "The Spirit of the BYU," and "Let's Go, America," and arrangements of "We Thank Thee O God For A Prophet" and "Come, Come, Ye Saints." Also included are a program notice, BYU Band Reminders, and a photocopy of a picture of Carl Busch.
